About Abbeyfield

Abbeyfield International is a charitable organisation that provides, through its member societies, accommodation and support for older people throughout the world. Over 90% of those staff are volunteers. This network of national and local societies manages a range of housing options offering 'companionship with independence'.

The Abbeyfield concept

The Abbeyfield sheltered housing concept was devised in 1955 to meet the need for supported housing for older lonely people. Houses are set up and run on a not-for-profit basis by local, volunteer-led Abbeyfield societies. Residents are provided with affordable accommodation in family-sized households. They have their own room which they furnish with personal belongings. Typically, each house has a resident housekeeper and volunteers provide support and companionship. Abbeyfield houses are situated to ensure that residents remain integrated with the local community.

The guiding principles

All societies operate according to the 'guiding principles' of the Abbeyfield movement:

Abbeyfield is a voluntary effort by people of goodwill to assist older people to achieve a fulfilling way of life. Members believe that:

  • Older people have an important role to play amongst their families, friends and in the community;
  • Overcoming loneliness and insecurity can make all the difference to an older person's well-being and quality of life;
  • Local people have an essential part to play in helping older people in their community.

Abbeyfield today

The movement is represented throughout the world and Abbeyfield now offers a range of services sensitive to changing needs and cultural differences. In each country, the Abbeyfield concept is adapted to meet local requirements and conditions.

Worldwide there are now around 9000 residents living in 850 Abbeyfield houses in 16 countries. In the UK and Australia a number of care homes and day care facilities extend the range of options available for an increasingly ageing population.

More than 12,000 volunteers worldwide give their time to provide support and companionship to residents.
