Abbeyfield Belgium
Monique Verstraeten founded Abbeyfield Belgium in 1995.
Thanks to the generosity of the Fondation Roi Baudouin, a splendid period house in Lixhe (near Liege) was earmarked for the first house. However, there were delays funding the necessary renovation and refurbishment, which meant that the first Abbeyfield house to open in Belgium was not at Lixhe, but at Villers-la-Ville. There, a former nunnery was made available by the Fondation Roi Baudouin to Abbeyfield Belgium on a 30 year lease and Abbeyfield Monticelli was formed as a new local society. The first resident moved in on 2nd January 2002. The house has 11 flats.
In July 2004, Belgium hosted the first European meeting of the Board of Directors of Abbeyfield International. This coincided wioth the opening of a 2nd Abbeyfield house in Etterbeek, a district of Brussels, and the directors were privileged to view the house and meet the first of the residents. There are 8 apartments.
A third house in Lixhe, near Liege has been established.
