Abbeyfield Belgium
In 1995 Monique Verstraeten brought the Abbeyfield concept to Belgium, until then Abbeyfield was totally unknown in the country.
She began by recruiting professional volunteers to form the Board of “Abbeyfield Belgium” and together they started a major promotion of the Abbeyfield idea.
In 2002 the first fully operational Abbeyfield house was opened at Lixhe (near Liège).
Two years later, Abbeyfield Belgium hosted the first European meeting of the Abbeyfield International Board of Directors.
By the end of 2008 Abbeyfield Belgium had three houses; one in Brussels-Etterbeek, the splendid stylish house in Lixhe near Liège and a third one in Namur.
According to the Abbeyfield concept, these three houses are close to the city centre.
The fourth house, in Watermael-Boisfort district of Brussels, opened the 1st of July 2009.
Further projects are on the way. There is an option on a bakery, in a residential village centre at about 50 km from Brussels. After a thorough renovation, this might become the fifth Abbeyfield House.
