Abbeyfield Ireland

The Countess of Wicklow was the main driving force behind the creation of The Abbeyfield Dublin Society in the 1980s. Soon after, The Abbeyfield Cork Society was founded as a result of four service clubs (Lions, Altrusa, Rotary and Soroptimists) working together. The national society, The Abbeyfield Foundation Ireland Ltd., was re-established in 1998.

Today there are two houses, one each in Dublin and Cork, both of which are usually full. In February 2002, HRH The Prince of Wales visited the Dublin house and had afternoon tea with the residents.

Although there is a need for further residents' places, particularly in some of the smaller towns in Ireland, there are no immediate plans for further development.
